St Bartholomew, apostle
Bartholomew is listed among the disciples of Christ in the synoptic gospels, but not in John's gospel, where his place appears to be taken by Nathaniel. The two are sometimes conflated. According to tradition he was flayed alive and then beheaded, and is often shown with a flaying-knife.
