1946

Three-light window with the figures of Christ, Peter and Andrew occupying the main lights. Numerous details and texts are suggestive of related themes, and the calling of the fishermen is depicted in the lower part of the central light, and at the top of the light Christ is shown preaching while seated in a boat. Angels and the figure of Isaiah are depicted in the upper roundels, and the figure of Matthew is shown in the lower left-hand light.

artist: Wilhelmina Geddes

Church of St Peter, Lampeter, Ceredigion
west wall of the nave (window number: WI)

Commissioned by Sir Arthur Harford of Falcondale, and his sister, in memory of their father Sir John Charles Harford (d. 1934), in 1936. The faculty for the window, dated 1937, notes that the sum of £960 was quoted by Wilhelmina Geddes. The completion and installation of the window was delayed by the Second World War.

Texts: with Matthew, lower left-hand light: 'And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea' (Matthew 4:18); behind Christ in the central light: 'He saith unto them follow me' (Matthew 4:19); angel with scroll, lower central light: 'The people which sat in darkness saw great light' (Matthew 4:16); across the three tracery roundels: 'Arise shine, thy light has come' (Isaiah 60:1).

A detailed description of the window and the delays that followed the initial commission is found in Nicola Gordon Bowe's chapter in Biblical Art from Wales, 2010. Much further detail is given in chapters ten and eleven of Wilhelmina Geddes: Life and Work, 2015, by the same author.
