Crucifixion with Mary and John. Symbols of the four evangelists on the arms of the cross. Rood beam decorated with a large fish. Details picked out in red paint.

artist: J. C. Hawes

Church of St David, Caldey Island
above the chancel arch

The large fish on the rood beam may be intended as a representation of Leviathan, the Old Testament monster of the deep, possibly here representing the powers of death and Hell, overcome by the sacrifice of Christ.
