Church of St Edmund, Crickhowell, Powys
west wall of the south aisle
Given in memory of Henry & Elizabeth Lucas. Dedicated Mar. 12 1899. H. I. L. 29 Dec. 1873 aged 69. E. L. 14 Mar. 1897 aged 83.
Hannah and Samuel are here juxtaposed with Elizabeth and John Baptist. The child Samuel, conceived after prayer to God, was 'lent to the Lord' (1 Sam. 1:28). Likewise John was conceived by the barren Elizabeth by Divine intervention (Luke 1:13). Samuel is thus the 'type' of John. Similarly Hannah's song (1 Sam. 2:1-10) is the 'type' of Mary's Magnificat, sung on the occasion of her Visitation to Elizabeth (Luke 1:46-55). The depiction of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Luke 2:22-39) showing Joseph, Mary, Simeon and Anna, takes up the theme of dedication. The artist has included, charmingly, two small children playing with the sacrificial offering of the two doves (2:24).
