The Annunciation
detail from The Annunciation and the Crucifixion

1964
Two-light window. Mary kneels before Gabriel with the dove of the Holy Spirit descending in the left-hand light. In the right-hand light Christ is shown crucified on the cross with three figures, probably John and another male figure standing and figure below holding Christ's feet. Virgin and child are shown in the main upper light, the infant Christ reaching down towards the Crucifixion scene and holding a bird.
firm/studio: Celtic Studios
Church of St Mary, Aberavon, Port Talbot, Neath Port Talbot
south wall of south aisle
Dedication: 'In loving memory of David and Margaret Lewis E. James and Kate Stephens. Presented by Mr & Mrs L.T. Lewis. Dedicated October 1964'.
The grouping (usually of Mary, John and Mary Magdalene) around the crucified Christ is unusual. The Virgin Mary is supplanted (although she is elsewhere in the window) by a bearded male figure, probably that of Joseph of Arimathea or Nicodemus. The figure below is dressed in brown, and in this pose usually depicts Mary Magdalene.
