Church of St James the Great, Walwyn's Castle, Pembrokeshire
chancel

Inscription: 'Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of Lights with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning.' (James 1: 17)
Dedication: In memory of George Lewis, Church Hill 1916. The reredos was installed around 1925.

A very good example of Coates Carters' cheerful style, using the local landscape. St David's Cathedral appears in the background, with the figure of the saint (right). To the left St James, patron of the church, led by an angel acolyte and on pilgrimage to St Davids - a nice conceit. Behind Christ as High Priest the rainbow, symbol of pardon, reconciliation and union with Christ. Christ is a living presence in His church, which is His Body, of which we with the saints are 'very members incorporate', and especially in the Eucharist celebrated at the altar - hence the chalice and Host.
