St Nicholas and St Oswald
about 1921
artist: Martin Travers
Church of St Stephen, Cardiff
near the west door
Travers made two designs for this dockside church for windows in memory of a local ship owner. The design depicting Nicholas with his ship was rejected in favour of that depicting the two saints. (Information kindly provided by Michael Yelton - see also Rodney Warrener and Michael Yelton, Martin Travers (1886-1948): An Appreciation, 2003).
The window was given in memory of the shipowner and merchant Robert Carrick, and the choice of Oswald was intended to represent the place of his birth in Northumbria.
The faculty for the window is dated April 1921.
