St Barachiel
from Archangels
Photo © Martin Crampin
Set of six windows depicting archangels as standing figures. From left to right: Jekudiel, Michael, Uriel, Raphael, Gabriel and Barachiel.
size: 59 cm (width of each light)
Church of St Benedict, Clydach, Swansea
(liturgical) north wall of the nave
Although the style of the windows could be consistent with the date of the church, the provenance of these windows is uncertain. They are also probably the work of two makers. The set of the four archangels Michael, Uriel, Raphael and Gabriel have been augmented with two windows in a slightly different (possibly later) style depicting Jekudiel and Barachiel.
Barachiel symbol is usually a breadbasket, but here his basket contains flowers. It is still consistent with the meaning of his name: 'blessings of God'.
