Three-light window with standing figures of the infant Moses in his mother's arms, Mary holding the infant Christ, and Hannah holding the infant Samuel. Scenes below of the finding of Moses in the bulrushes, the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, and Hannah bringing the boy Samuel to Eli. Angels with texts and family heraldry in the tracery.
firm/studio: Robert J. Newbery
patron: William Thomas Lewis
Church of St Elvan, Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taff
west wall of the south aisle
Texts below figures: 'She saw he was a goodly child' (Exodus 2:2); 'A light to lighten the Gentiles' (Luke 2:32); 'For this child I prayed' (1 Samuel 1:27).
Texts held by angels in the tracery lights: 'Love is strong as death', 'Many waters cannot quench love' (Song of Solomon 8:6, 7).
Inscription: 'AMDG Erected by the Lord Merthyr of Senghenydd in thanksgiving for numerous blessings and especially to commemorate his Marriage in this Church on March 1st 1864 with Anne Rees of Llety Shenkin in this Parish MDCCCCXI.' The window was installed at the time of the building of the south aisle.
The dedication by W.T. Lewis, Lord Merthyr of Senghenydd, expressing thanksgiving for his marriage makes this window almost a second memorial to his wife, Anne Rees (a window on the north side of the church being explicitly so). The subject of the window is three mothers in the Bible, and the face of Hannah is surely the likeness of Anne.
