St Dunawd

  St Dunawd

Photo © Martin Crampin

probably second half of the nineteenth century

Roundel with a portrait of a bishop holding a crosier and a book, set in a hemispherical border of flowers.

Church of St Dunawd, Bangor-on-Dee, Wrexham
north aisle vestry

The image is framed and the medium is uncertain. The image appears to be painted on fabric and the flowers are probably embroidered. The listing in the church terrier states that it was restored and framed in 1908 and presented to the church by the rector, Revd M. Erlington-Bisset, and that the image is a copy of a seventeenth-century fresco. It is possible that the the fresco was formerly in the church, although a seventeenth-century date seems unlikely. The was previously installed in the south aisle.
