Virgin and Child

  Virgin and Child

Photo © Martin Crampin, Imaging the Bible in Wales

about 1920-1928

Wooden work piece.

size: 40 cm (height) [approx]
artist: possibly Eric Gill
artist: probably Theodore Baily

Caldey Abbey, Caldey Island
Abbey common room

The carving closely resembles an Orthodox icon, and has been attributed to Eric Gill. However Gill's friend Dom Theodore Baily, a monk of Caldey, was influenced by Orthodox iconography, and it is perhaps more likely that the carving is by Baily, rather than Gill.
