Christ with the Virgin and Child, St John the Baptist, St Luke and St David
Photo © Martin Crampin, Imaging the Bible in Wales
1915
Five-light window with standing figures. Angels holding heraldic shields in the tracery.
designer: Ninian Comper
Church of St John the Baptist, Cardiff
east wall of the chancel
Given in memory of Dr Charles Vachell.
As Charles Vachell was a doctor, it was fitting that Luke should be among the figures. Luke is depicted writing, or perhaps drawing on a book. As he looks directly across at the Virgin and Child, who return his gaze, this seems to be a reference to the tradition that Luke painted a portrait of the Virgin and Child.
