Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591-1666)


Born in Cento, near Bologna in 1591, he was known as Il Guercino (the squinter) because he was slightly cross-eyed. He studied at Bologna and Venice and later established an academy in his home town of Cento. He died in 1666. Example of his work at National Museum of Wales, Cardiff.
