Harry Clarke Stained Glass Ltd (1886-1973)
Irish ecclesiastical decorators established by Joshua Clarke as Joshua Clarke & Sons and continued by his sons Harry Clarke, who took over the stained glass output of the firm, and his brother Walter. After Walter's death the firm was re-established as Harry Clarke Stained Glass Ltd or Harry Clarke Stained Glass Studios in 1930, although Harry Clarke died shortly afterwards in 1931.
The first manager was Charles B. Simmonds, with a team of young designers including Richard King, William Dowling and George Walsh, all of whom were in their early twenties. The firm was initially tasked with perpetuating the visual style of Harry Clarke but the style of their work gradually evolved during the 1930s. Richard King became manager in 1935, but left in 1940, with William Dowling assuming the role. The studio in Dublin continued under until 1973.
