Gwen John (1876-1939)
Born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, together with her brother Augustus John she was one of the most celebrated artists of the twentieth century to be born in Wales. After training at the Slade in London, she spent much of her career in France. John was received into the Catholic church in 1913, and painted several religious portraits and made drawings of women and clergy in churches.
Her work is found in major collections including the Tate Gallery, London, and the National Museum Cardiff. Archives at the National Library of Wales.
